Japan-China Relations and Business Sentiment

In a Reuters corporate survey conducted in January, Japanese companies were asked about the impact of deteriorating Japan-China relations. 68% of respondents expressed concern about the potential impact on the Japanese economy as a whole.
Regarding the impact on their own businesses:
58% said there was little or no impact.
35% said they expected an impact in the future.
9% said they were already experiencing an impact.
The survey was conducted from December 24 to January 7, with questionnaires sent to 494 companies and responses received from 237 companies.
Of the companies surveyed:
Approximately 30% were in transportation, retail, and service industries that are affected by demand from visitors to Japan.
Approximately 50% were manufacturers that could potentially be affected by restrictions on rare earth exports.
During the survey period, on January 6, the Chinese government announced tighter export controls on dual-use items destined for Japan. However, it remains unclear which specific items are subject to the new controls, including whether rare earth elements, whose supply is a concern, are covered.
